Stand Up Comedy
Conventions:
- "thank you"
- one liner to open up the crowd
- first big joke seems like you don't really know where they are headed
-raunchy and catches the crowd off guard
-"but let me explain"
-then crowd is in on the joke and shakes off the hesitation of
"is this going to be funny?"
-reference this joke in the middle of act
-last joke: seem unrelated to first joke, but have the punchline parallel the first joke. - has a drink next to them on a stool
-puts drink up to mouth when they are about to deliver the punch line to attempt at acting natural - Cohesive jokes
- Word play/ puns
- Comic timing
- Phrasing-- Avert expectations. Sounds dirty but is innocuous.
- Referential humor
- Voice inflection and timing when delivering punchline
- Set up = story ---- followed by punchline
- Taboo subject matter (race, gender, stereotypes, politics, sex) --- no subject is untouchable
- Acting out jokes playfully--- sometimes on point, sometimes exaggerated
- Perverse/ crude language
- Pauses to emphasize punchline/ pun/ innuendo
